8 Simple Tips to Make Your Bed

Start with Mattress Protector

Use a mattress protector first. This will be the protective layer that lies directly on the mattress or on top of the mattress pad and protects your mattress from dust, allergens, spills, and wear and tear. If you have allergies or just want your mattress to be fresh and clean, this is a must-step. Plus, some protectors are designed to guard against bed bugs, which adds an extra layer of peace of mind.

Secure the Mattress Topper

If you prefer using a mattress pad or topper for extra comfort, this step is actually done before the fitted sheet. A mattress pad adds an extra layer of softness and can even help regulate body temperature while you sleep. Attach the straps to your topper, securing them by wrapping each around the corners of the mattress to keep it in place. Mattress pads and toppers can really upgrade your comfort, particularly if your mattress is a little too firm for you.

Add the Fitted Sheet

Take up your fitted sheet and lay it out over the mattress. Align the short sides with the edges of the bed. Start by pulling one corner underneath the mattress. Then, pull the elastic over the other three. For a fitted sheet, it should be flush on the mattress, leaving no wrinkles or loose places. If you are using a larger bed, it can sometimes be a bit tricky to get the corners just right, but taking the time to smooth it out will ensure it looks great.

Place the Top Sheet

If you like to use a top (flat) sheet, lay it out over the bed with the soft side facing down. This way, when you tuck it in, the smooth side is the one you feel when you lie down. Make sure the sheet is centered, and then tuck it in at the foot of the bed. The sides can be tucked tightly for a crisp, clean look, or you can leave them loose for a more relaxed, hotel-style feel. Whatever you choose, make sure the sheet is evenly spread out, so it looks tidy.

Hospital Corners for a Neat Finish

For that classic look, consider using hospital corners. Tucking the top sheet with hospital corners not only creates a smooth, neat finish but also helps keep the sheet in place longer. To do this, tuck the top sheet beneath the mattress, then pull up one side to form a triangle. Tuck the triangle under the mattress and repeat this on the other side. The result is a polished and well-made bed that looks neat and tidy, no matter what!

Place the Comforter or Duvet

Another step in making your bed is to add a comforter, duvet, or quilt. This is the top layer that gives your bed that full, cozy look. Begin by centering it evenly on the bed so the edges are aligned on both sides. If you’re using a duvet, fold the top edge over the head of the bed about 6-8 inches. This helps create a polished, neat appearance. Then, tuck the duvet in at the foot of the bed and along the sides for a clean finish. The duvet can be a bit tricky, but with a little adjusting, it will look perfectly placed.

Fluff the Pillows

Once your sheets and blankets are in place, it is time to fluff your pillows. Fluffing your pillows gives them their shape and fullness back. Then, arrange them neatly at the top of the bed. You can add extra pillows for a more decorative touch or keep it simple for a clean look. This requires that they are arranged in such a way as to complement the rest of the bed, hence creating a warm and relaxing ambience.

Add Decorative Touches

Finally, bring everything together with a few decorative touches. A throw blanket at the foot of the bed adds both warmth and a splash of colour. You can also add a few smaller pillows to create a cozy, inviting look. These touches aren’t just for aesthetics, they can also make your bed feel even more comfortable and personalized. Choose items that match the theme of your bedroom, whether it’s a soft, neutral look or a pop of vibrant colour.

Bonus Bed-Making Tips

Make Your Bed Daily

It may seem like a small task, but making your bed every morning can have a big impact on your day. Starting with a tidy, organized space gives you a sense of accomplishment and sets the tone for a productive day ahead. Plus, coming home to a made bed at night feels so much better than climbing into an unmade one. It’s a simple, easy habit that can make a world of difference.

Wash Your Bedding Regularly

Fresh, clean sheets make all the difference when it comes to comfort and hygiene. Washing your bedding every week or two helps keep your sleep space free from dust mites, allergens, and bacteria. Not only does it feel great to sleep on fresh sheets, but it’s also an important step in maintaining a healthy sleeping environment.

Invest in Comfortable Materials

Comfort should always be a priority when it comes to bedding. Purchase soft, breathable fabrics that can create a dreamy feel for your bed. Soft, breathable materials include cotton, linen, and bamboo. The right fabrics can also help with temperature regulation, keeping you cool in the summer as well as warm in the winter.

Rotate Your Mattress

To help your mattress last longer and to keep it feeling comfortable, rotate it periodically. You should plan to flip or rotate your mattress every three to six months. This prevents you from facing the same area of the mattress and helps to redistribute the weight to avoid uneven wear and tear over time.
